Case study - Up and away for Dan

Posted on 23/06/2016 by David Rennie

In many ways Dan Hynd is your quintessential 22 year old male.  He has a favourite football team (Hibs), enjoys spending time with his friends, and has a keen eye for trendy trainers and t-shirts.

The only difference is that Dan has Cerebral Palsy. Dan’s mum Veronica cared for him until a few years ago when Dan left the family home and began living as independent a life as possible in his own home with the support of a team of carers.Dan Hynd - H1 Complex Care

Every aspect of Dan’s life as a 22 year old is catered for. He receives a significant amount of support from a specially selected team of carers from H1 Complex Care who provide all aspects of personal/emotional support and social care allowing Dan to live as independent a life as possible.

With a keen interest in making and producing music, Dan can talk endlessly with his carer James who plays in a band. With other carers being selected to match Dan’s other interests.

Dan is completely in control of his care package. He is involved with the planning of his care and how he spends his free time. Regular meetings are held with his team and his mum to make sure his care is constantly evolving.  His weekly routine includes: three days a week at the Upward Mobility Project in Edinburgh, playing music at Drake Music, shopping, and socialising with his friends.

Up, up, and away

For some people the thought of boarding a plane and enjoying an overseas holiday with a loved one with cerebral palsy can be daunting. This was no deterrent for Dan and his team of H1 Complex Care carers. Accompanied by two carers, Dan enjoyed a holiday to his destination of choice, Magaluf, last year.

Through meticulous planning, the team at H1 Complex Care and Dan’s mum booked a suitable adapted room in a lovely hotel and arranged for all equipment to be available for Dan’s arrival i.e. hoist and shower chair. Dan travelled with his own wheelchair with the chosen airline took great care of it and, more importantly, Dan.

Dan enjoyed his holiday so much he booked up to a specially-adapted self-catered apartment in Salou this year.
