Job Title: Senior Carer

Responsible to: Staff Nurse/Enrolled Nurse

Overall Job Description:

Preferred: SVQ level 3 with medication module

Essential qualification: Must be qualified to at least SVQ level 2 and be prepared to undertake and complete SVQ level 3 within a 6 month period. Must have completed SVQ 3 medication module and be competent as stated in induction and training policy. Must also have at least two years' experience in care of the elderly.

Desirable experience: SVQ level 3 or equivalent and experience in working with care of the elderly in a care home setting. To have experience in boots monitored dosage system.

To care for residents in the home in accordance with best practice ensuring at all times residents and visitors are treated courteously and with the highest respect.

To ensure the wellbeing of residents by supervising, maintaining and developing the standards of care and practice of care worker staff and to participate in direct care activities.

The service will provide support to residents in the home. The service will be informed by the right of each person living in the home to maintain relationships with family and friends to participate in and contribute to their life in the community.

The individual needs and desires of each resident will be identified through individual care plans drawn up with the resident and those who know and care about them, families, friends, advocates, staff and other appropriate professionals. The senior carer will have the responsibility for the implementation of these plans on a day-to-day basis.

Supervisory responsibilities

To work alongside staff in order to provide guidance, consistency and support in their work with residents and encourage positive attitudes at all times.

To support and motivate staff to explore opportunities in order to extend peoples choices.

To instruct staff and ensure implementation of first aid procedures, hygiene, safety at work and fire prevention procedures.

To provide supervision for staff at regular interview sessions and to allocate workloads.

Maintain good working relationships with care, night and domestic staff.

Participate fully in care worker system.

Develop team, individuals and self to enhance performance and promote training and equal opportunities.

To offer support and guidance to carers as required. To work alongside care team and provide an example of positive working practice.

To ensure that all appropriate information is passed to others in handover at beginning and end of each shift.

To pursue the aims and objectives of the home.

To undertake administration duties when required.

To engage in direct caring duties.

To be involved in the formulation, implementation and review of care plans.

To order, sign for and administer medication.

To undertake appropriate duties allocated by the management staff.

To work closely with Staff Nurse/Enrolled Nurse, keeping him/her informed of any difficulties, deterioration or progress with residents.

Undertake supervision on a 12 weekly basis.
